WAP Sites (Mobile Phone Content)

What is WAP?

WAP stands for Wireless Access Protocol, and is more commonly referred to as "Mobile Internet"

Most of today's mobile phones, smartphones and PDAs come with a built in WAP browser, (recently Microsoft have produced a mobile phone operating system "Windows Mobile" that has internet explorer built in, offering a feature rich experience). With a WAP browser, you can access dedicated WAP pages while on the move.

As WAP phones have smaller screens, content is often kept to a minimum, and is often text-based pages with just a few small images (such as a company logo). The upside of this is that the pages are quite efficient and downloaded fairly quickly.

WAP is supplied as a service by most mobile phone operators. When WAP was launched, it was available from browsers that dialled up a special WAP number. Now WAP access is available over GPRS, allowing faster browsing via an always-on connection. With GPRS, you are billed by the amount of data you send/receive. Most UK operators offer an inclusive GPRS WAP allowance.

Getting WAP

Here's what you need to get WAP:

  • A mobile phone with a WAP browser built-in
  • A SIM card that supports data transfer
  • Inclusive GRRS WAP allowance (recommended)

Once your mobile it set up correctly, you can access the WAP content instantly.
